The Genomics Tool Development for the Fagaceae project has a varied and robust outreach and education agenda. As the project title implies, our primary goal is to provide the Fagaceae scientific community with a suite of genomic tools. These are offered at this site as soon as they become available and can be quality checked. We seek to further inform our scientific colleagues through participation in conferences, symposia, and invited lectures (see list below).
Our progress and efforts are further communicated to the non-scientific community through the following measures:
- Affiliation with non-profit organizations: The American Chestnut Foundation and the Institute of Forest Biotechnology
- Support of a Kenan Fellow to develop high school curricula presenting the story of the American Chestnut, its economic and ecologic relevance in historic Appalachian communities, and it's subsequent demise due to the introduced chestnut blight
- Support the continued delivery of a hands-on lab-training course in Genomics and Proteomics (GEN 730) provided as continuing education for high-school teachers in South Carolina by Clemson University (Dr. Jeff Tomkins)
- Development of faculty and undergraduate exchanges with Shaw University, in Raleigh
- Sharing genomic resources with colleagues working with Fagaceae species in Europe
